Newly Installed Worshipful Master

As the newly installed Worshipful Master of Garryowen LOL 221 and the 3rd
since its formation in 2008, I am honoured to lead this lodge into 2013.
The lodge, as from day one, has always pushed on and refused to go stale
or get complacent, but instead, endeavour to look for ways of progressing.
This attitude will continue with my blessing and support throughout my term
in the chair. Twenty –Twelve was a great year with the district transfer to
Sixmilewater in February, which has proved to be a very successful transition
and the unfurling parade of our new impressive bannerette. The covenant
commemorative exhibitions and parades, especially the GOLI’s parade in
Belfast which we attended, will live in the memories of all who witnessed
them.

Our lodge has hit the odd bump on the road like all lodges do from time to
time but we have kept the vehicle of fellowship firmly on its long journey.
It was disappointing that a small minority decided to work to an agenda
other than to the ethos and all that Garryowen stands for. However these
elements have moved on elsewhere for the good, well being and satisfaction of the brethren of our lodge . Through our popularity we have since initiated new brethren into the fold which has more than compensated our numerical loss through these unforeseen flaws.

I am looking forward to my new responsibilities and duties as WM and equally honoured to have Hubert Ewing as my DM. We both served together in the UDR and been friends for more years than I can remember, so I know the strengths & qualities that Hubert will bring to the table which will do nothing but assure the future and stability of Garryowen . In fact, if it wasn’t for Hubert there would not have been a Garryowen LOL 221 as it was his initial idea to form a lodge with the UDR theme. The remainder of the office bearers stay in their respective positions from 2012, so they are well versed in their responsibilities and will hit the ground running. We have virtually a new committee in place to help take the burden of the workload with fundraising at the top of their “things to do” list. Like every lodge, fundraising is essential to pay bills, buy regalia and furnishings which can amount to thousands of pounds.

January is a very busy month for our officers with the attendance at installations throughout our district and other districts. It is very enjoyable to visit other lodge’s halls over the 4 week period and the benefits from the fellowship out-weigh this heavy and demanding schedule.
I wish all brethren, sisters and all who embrace our culture, from whatever corner of the world you find yourselves in, a peaceful and prosperous 2013.
